Why I’m Ditching the Puzzle Piece and Embracing the Rainbow Infinity Symbol!

Mother Helping her Daughter use a Laptop

Fun fact about ASD: The universally recognised symbol has long been the puzzle piece, often a multi-coloured one. But guess what? I’ve decided to embrace the newer Rainbow Infinity symbol instead! And let me tell you why – grab a cuppa, fellow SEND mums, because this is a little love letter to empowerment!

The Puzzle Piece? Not for Me!

Now, I get that the puzzle piece has been around for ages, and some people still connect with it. But personally, I’ve never loved what it implies – that autistic individuals have a ‘missing piece’ or need to be ‘solved’. Your child isn’t incomplete. There’s nothing to ‘fix’ or ‘figure out’ – they are beautifully whole just as they are.

Infinite Possibilities? Yes, Please!

Now, let’s talk about the Rainbow Infinity symbol. Firstly, it’s a RAINBOW – need I say more? I mean, if you know me, you know colours are my THING (from my clothes to my ever-changing hair, it’s a vibe!). But beyond that, the infinity loop represents endless possibilities, growth, and the idea that neurodiversity is a spectrum – not a puzzle to be solved but a journey to be embraced. How empowering is that?!

Representation Matters!

Symbols matter. The way we talk about our kids and neurodiversity matters. And for me, the Rainbow Infinity symbol just feels so much more positive, inclusive, and celebratory. Because our kids aren’t mysteries; they are wonders. They aren’t problems to be solved; they are limitless, capable, and uniquely brilliant in their own ways.

So, if you see me rocking my Rainbow Infinity gear, just know – it’s a little statement of love, empowerment, and the belief that our kiddos can shine in their own beautiful, colourful, infinite ways!

Fellow SEND mums, what do you think? Do you have a favourite ASD symbol?
